Oils have become increasingly popular in everyday skincare. They can bring many benefits to the skin, but only if they are properly matched to its needs. Have you been thinking about starting to use them but don’t know where to begin? Is your skin sensitive and you’re wondering which oil will have a soothing effect? Or perhaps you have mature skin and are looking for an anti-ageing effect, but have no idea which oil can deliver that? Take a look at our tips and choose an oil that will benefit your skin.
How do oils work?
Oil-based skincare can bring many benefits to the skin. However, there is one condition – the oil must be properly matched to the skin type. Oils are plant-based fats obtained by pressing parts of plants such as seeds or fruit kernels. They indirectly moisturise the skin by forming an occlusive layer on its surface, which helps prevent water loss. Depending on the type of oil, they may also offer additional skincare properties.
Which oil should you choose?
Choose the one best suited to your skin in order to bring it real benefits. Otherwise, it may have the opposite effect and worsen your skin’s condition. Oils are divided into three basic groups based on their content of polyunsaturated fatty acids:
- drying oils – best suited for acne-prone and oily skin
- semi-drying oils – best suited for combination and normal skin
- non-drying oils – best suited for dry and mature skin
Prickly pear seed oil is a rich source of essential fatty acids, vitamin E and phytosterols. It deeply hydrates, regenerates and soothes irritation. It has strong antioxidant properties, helping to strengthen the skin against external stressors. With regular use, it smooths, firms and improves skin tone. Choose it if your skin is dry and mature.
Raspberry seed oil is rich in Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids and has antioxidant and soothing properties. It absorbs quickly and does not leave a greasy film. Choose it if your skin is oily, combination or dry.
Black seed oil is rich in fatty acids, vitamins A, C and E, and trace minerals. It supports skin regeneration, and has anti-inflammatory and soothing effects. Choose it if your skin is acne-prone, problematic or irritated.
Plum seed oil is a lightweight oil rich in omega fatty acids and vitamin E. It strengthens the skin barrier and supports regeneration. Choose it if your skin is dry, mature or combination.
Jojoba oil has moisturising and regulating properties. It supports the skin’s hydrolipid barrier and has a soothing effect. Choose it if your skin is dry, sensitive or problematic.
Rosehip oil has anti-ageing and brightening properties. It supports skin regeneration and improves elasticity. Choose it if your skin is mature, vascular or prone to pigmentation.
Perilla oil has soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. It supports skin regeneration and reduces irritation. Choose it if your skin is problematic or acne-prone.
Cherry seed oil hydrates and brightens the skin. It supports regeneration and improves skin tone. Choose it if your skin is acne-prone or mature.
Hazelnut oil has regenerating and normalising properties. It strengthens the skin’s protective barrier. Choose it if your skin is dry or vascular.
Watermelon seed oil is lightweight and absorbs quickly. It hydrates and soothes irritation. Choose it if your skin is sensitive or dry.
How to use oils in your skincare routine?
There are many ways to use oils – you can adapt them to your skin’s needs and your personal preferences:
1. Instead of cream – apply hydrating essence (e.g. hyaluronic acid) first, then the oil.
2. Over cream – oil seals in the skincare and helps retain active ingredients.
3. Mixed with cream – blend oil with your cream in your hand.
4. With other products – e.g. aloe gel or hyaluronic acid.
5. As a make-up remover – gently removes make-up and impurities.
