The CWC method (Conditioner–Wash–Conditioner routine) is a haircare technique that restores shine, hydration, and smoothness. Have you heard of it before? Are you wondering what it actually is, whether it will work for your hair type, or what products you should use? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this article is for you. Here you’ll find all our tips on washing hair using the CWC method.
So what exactly is the CWC method?
CWC stands for Conditioner – Wash – Conditioner. It involves applying conditioner first, which is especially beneficial for dry and damaged hair. The second step is shampooing the scalp as usual. The final step is applying conditioner again after washing. Simple, right?
Who is the CWC method recommended for?
If your hair is dry, dull, damaged, or curly, this method is for you. In terms of porosity, medium- and high-porosity hair benefits the most. However, avoid it if your hair is fine and prone to greasiness, as it may feel too heavy. In that case, a simpler shampoo–conditioner routine (SC) may work better. Still, conditioning after every wash is always recommended to protect the hair.
How to wash hair using the CWC method?
1. C – Conditioner
Wet your hair and apply conditioner to the lengths and ends, avoiding the scalp. Applying conditioner to the scalp may weigh hair down at the roots. Leave it on for a few to several minutes, but do not rinse. Choose a product suited to your hair’s needs.
2. W – Wash
Wet your hair again and apply shampoo to the scalp, cleansing it thoroughly. As you rinse, the shampoo foam flowing through the lengths will gently cleanse them as well. A helpful tip: always shampoo the scalp twice to ensure all buildup and impurities are removed.
3. C – Conditioner
After rinsing, gently squeeze excess water from your hair and apply conditioner again, chosen according to your hair type and needs. Leave it on for about 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

What are the benefits of this method?
It provides intense hydration and nourishment. Curly hair becomes more defined and bouncy, dry hair becomes smoother, damaged hair is less frizzy, and dull hair regains shine. Overall, it delivers multiple visible benefits.
Which conditioner should you choose?
The best choice depends on your hair’s needs. In conscious haircare, we focus on the balance of three key ingredients: proteins, emollients, and humectants (the PEH balance). Observe your hair and adjust accordingly.
Protein Conditioner – for dull, lifeless hair lacking volume.
Emollient Conditioner – for hair that tangles easily and needs softness.
Humectant Conditioner – for dry, rough, and dehydrated hair.
Which conditioner for which step?
For the first “C” use humectant or protein conditioners. For the final step, choose an emollient conditioner to seal in moisture and smooth the hair. Finish with a cool water rinse to close the hair cuticles and enhance shine.
