Slightly nutty in taste, chia seeds are native to South America. They also contain huge amounts of fibre, with very little salt and very little sugar. Although chia seeds are just tiny black seeds, they hide many valuable ingredients. Among other things, they contain omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9 saturated fatty acids. Historically, chia seeds derived from the Salvia hispanica plant were a valuable food for the Aztecs and Mayans. The word 'chia' in the Mayan language meant 'strength'.
Country of origin of the raw material: Paraguay (PAR), Peru (P), Bolivia (B), Argentina (A) - designation indicated by the expiry date.
The tiny chia seeds, which look like poppy seeds, are a source of valuable protein containing essential amino acids. Protein accounts for approximately 14% of their total weight (comparatively the same as in most plants). Thanks to their protein and fibre content, chia seeds reduce cravings, stop hunger attacks and snacking, and help you lose weight (while maintaining a balanced diet).
Like flaxseed, chia seeds contain significant amounts of omega3 acids. They even have more of them than salmon. The omega 3s are found in chia seeds in the form of ALA acids - a form that, in the human body, needs to be converted to EPA and DHA (which, unfortunately, the body cannot do). Although chia seeds are not considered as good a source of omega 3 acids as fish and fish oil (they lack DHA and EPA acids), they can increase the concentration of ALA and EPA acids in the body, also important for the body.
