Naturally full of nutrients, an excellent choice for health!

Natural brown rice is one type of rice that has not undergone a polishing process, meaning that the outer layers of the grain, such as the bran and germ, remain intact. Unlike white rice, which has been stripped of these outer layers, brown rice retains most of its natural nutrients.

Brown rice is rich in fibre, which aids digestion and blood sugar regulation. It also contains more nutrients such as B vitamins, iron, magnesium and manganese. In addition, brown rice has a lower glycaemic index than white rice, which means that it affects the rise in blood glucose levels more slowly and steadily.

Brown rice contains many nutrients that have health benefits. Here are some of them:

  1. Fibre: It is rich in dietary fibre, especially insoluble fibre. Fibre supports the proper functioning of the digestive system, regulates intestinal peristalsis, prevents constipation and promotes healthy weight maintenance.
  2. B vitamins: It is a source of B vitamins such as thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3) and pantothenic acid (B5). These vitamins play an important role in metabolism, energy production, nervous system function and maintaining healthy skin.
  3. Minerals: Provides various minerals such as magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, iron and zinc. Magnesium is important for healthy bones, muscle function and blood pressure regulation. Manganese is essential for metabolism and nutrient absorption. Phosphorus is essential for healthy bones and teeth, and iron is important for oxygen transport in the blood. Zinc plays a role in immune system function and wound healing.
  4. Phytonutrients: It also contains various phytonutrients such as lignans, phytosterols and phenols. These plant compounds have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help protect the body from harmful free radicals and reduce the risk of certain chronic diseases.

Method of preparation:

Always rinse rice thoroughly under running water before cooking. This helps to remove excess starch and other impurities. The ratio of water to rice is usually 1 part rice to 2 parts water. You can adjust the amount of water depending on your preferred degree of softness of the grains. Transfer the rinsed rice to a pot and add the appropriate amount of water. If you wish, you can add a pinch of salt for taste. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a lid and simmer. The cooking time depends on your preferred degree of softness of the grains and can be between 40 and 50 minutes. You can check if it is ready by tasting it. Once cooked, turn off the heat and leave it in a closed pot for a few minutes. This will allow the grains to gain texture and cook evenly. After a few minutes, you can gently loosen the rice with a fork or wooden spoon.

Brown rice has many uses in the kitchen and can be used as a healthy alternative to white rice. Here are some of the ways in which it can be used:

  • Addition to main dishes: It can be served as a side dish to a variety of main dishes. You can serve it with roasted, braised or grilled meats, fish or vegetables. Thanks to its slightly nutty note, it adds a unique flavour to dishes.
  • Salads: Cooked brown rice makes an excellent base for salads. You can combine it with pieces of grilled chicken, fresh vegetables, greens and your favourite dressing. It adds texture and nutritiousness to salads.
  • Risotto: Although traditionally risotto is made with arborio rice, brown rice can be a great alternative. You can use it to prepare a creamy risotto with vegetables, mushrooms or seafood.
  • Sushi: It can be used as a base for sushi, instead of traditional white rice. It gives sushi a more nature-like taste and adds extra nutritional value.
  • Desserts: It can also be used to prepare desserts. You can cook it in vegetable milk with cinnamon and fruit for a healthy and tasty version of sweet rice.
  • Burgers and chops: Ground rice can be used as an ingredient to make vegan or vegetarian burgers, chops or meatballs. It adds texture and nutritional value.
